This piece is inspired by the third episode of House of the Dragon on HBO. I chose the moment where Daemon Targaryen runs to the Crabfeeder to attack while the army is occupied in battle. Ok, ok...yes, this is technically fan art. I just don't like that term because it makes it feel cheap. However, I did have other goals with this illustration other than fanatic appreciation. I wanted to focus on composition. I divided the canvas into thirds, used guiding elements such as the arrows to draw the viewers eye to the focal point (the head and sword), color to make these focal points pop and to make everything else recede, and framing elements such as the army on both sides, the mountains which create a "v" shape with the characters head being at the vertex and the dust and dirt being kicked up in the foreground that mimics that same "v" shape and also hides the back foot so as to a) not create a tangent, b) not draw attention to it and c) simplify the overall piece.
Below you can see the thumbnail I created for this piece and how it's is divided into 6 equal parts.
I then refined the drawing a bit.
and added some local color before going into the painting process.
